Requirements
- WordPress 6.9 or later (for the Abilities API).
- PHP 7.4 or later.
- The official MCP Adapter plugin. WordPress offers to install it with BuildWire.
- HTTPS, so remote AI apps can reach your site.
Install
- In your dashboard, go to Plugins > Add New and search for BuildWire.
- Click Install Now, then Activate. Accept the MCP Adapter when WordPress asks.
- Open BuildWire > Setup. The five steps turn green as you complete them.
With WP-CLI:
wp plugin install buildwire --activate
Connect your AI app
Your endpoint is https://your-site.com/wp-json/buildwire/mcp. BuildWire > Setup shows it with copy buttons.
| App | How to connect |
|---|---|
| Claude.ai | Settings, Connectors, Add custom connector. Paste the endpoint, click Connect, sign in to your site and click Allow. |
| ChatGPT | Plugins, Add, Add custom MCP server. Paste the endpoint, keep OAuth, sign in and click Allow. |
| Claude Code | Create a key in BuildWire > Setup and run the command it shows. |
| Claude Desktop, Cursor, Windsurf | Add the JSON from BuildWire > Setup. It runs npx mcp-remote with your key. |
| VS Code and others | Add an HTTP MCP server with the endpoint and an Authorization: Bearer header. |
claude mcp add --transport http buildwire https://your-site.com/wp-json/buildwire/mcp --header "Authorization: Bearer YOUR_KEY"
Build your first page
Ask in plain words, for example:
Use BuildWire to read my design tokens, then build a draft home page for my bakery and give me the preview link.
The page arrives as a draft made of native Elementor widgets or blocks. Open the preview link, then ask the AI to publish, or publish it yourself.
Keys and permissions
Each AI app gets its own key with a profile: Read only, Build drafts, Edit live pages or Full access. You can limit a key to chosen pages and revoke it any time under BuildWire > Keys.
Undo and the activity log
BuildWire saves a snapshot before every change. Open BuildWire > Activity and click Undo, or ask the AI to undo. Snapshots are kept for 30 days by default; change it under Settings.
Activate BuildWire Pro
- Download the Pro zip from My account > Downloads and upload it under Plugins > Add New > Upload Plugin. Keep the free plugin active.
- Open BuildWire > Pro, paste your licence key and click Activate.
- Pro tools appear in your AI app on the next connection. Updates arrive on the Plugins screen.
Local, .test, staging. and dev. sites do not use a slot. When a licence ends, the Pro tools switch off; your pages and the free plugin keep working.
Troubleshooting
- The app cannot connect. Run the site check on BuildWire > Setup. It tests HTTPS, permalinks, the endpoint and sign-in addresses.
- Your host strips the Authorization header. Use the key in the connector URL (
?bw_key=), or ask your host to pass the header to PHP. - A write returns warnings. They point at settings Elementor will not use or fonts the site cannot load, so the AI can fix them in the same session.
